Our 4th grade teacher Mrs.Highins made these statues of famous African Americans. We are proud to display them in the library. We have changed a lot of things in the library. We started the week before Christmas break and are wrapping up now.
A big shoutout goes to Mrs. Rosson who did most of the heavy lifting! She moved fiction chapter books to their new home. We moved Non Fiction books to the outside wall which freed up lots of room in the middle. So much so we were able to get rid of one whole shelf and free up more room. After that the big project is sorting and labeling the children's books into a new category system. We are grouping books under 10 main categories: Animals, Basics, Go, Holidays, Me, Nature, People, Places, Play, Stories. Each category has subcategories. They will then be shelved and labeled as such making it much easier for both students and teachers to locate books on specific topics, or on certain interests. So here is the plan! As you have read we changed the shelving and labeling of the Fiction Chapter books. It has worked out great so far! The books are easier to shelve, they are easier to find, and students have a much easier time finding what they want. It has also made purchasing easier as we can see what genre we are light in. The next step is a two part. First we will categorize the picture books into usable categories for both teachers and students. This will take a lot of time and thinking, as often books fall into multiple categories. Next we will begin to weed and replace books in the non fiction section. We have already begun this process and have ordered many new titles to build up our Dewey 000-199 section.
Check the books out HERE! We have 144 new Fiction Chapter books to help replace the books we weeded from the library. These are carefully selected to meet different interests, levels, and to fill our different genres. We ordered many series books that we were missing and even a few that were lost in previous years. We ordered classic books to replace books falling apart. We also ordered new high interest books including Caldecott and Newbery award winners. The largest genre we invested in was Graphic Novels. These are rapidly growing in popularity. It is also one of our smallest genres. I invested in popular titles such as "Diary of a Wimpy Kid" but also some really interesting looking new books and Graphic Novel versions of classic stories such as "Gulliver's Travels" and "The Wizard of Oz".
The Book Fair was a success. Thanks to all those who participated! With funds we raised we can make our library even better.
We have learned many things in our first few weeks here in the Library. We learned how to take care of our books. One way we learned to take care of our books is to use a book marker and not bending the corners.
Here are some of our book markers we have made. |
